Project Description:
The 3 Stars Brewing tasting room is opening this fall in Washington, D.C., and if you weren’t a beer lover before, soon you will be. With eight beers on tap and a brewery on-site in the back warehouse area, this latest concept from Owners Dave Coleman and Mike McGarvey of 3 Stars and architecture and design firm //3877 is the perfect spot to grab a cold one to beat the summer heat.

David Shove-Brown and the //3877 team created a design concept for 3 Stars Brewery that is industrial and simple—reclaimed wood, corrugated metal and industrial light fixtures offer an “urban farmhouse” atmosphere, while a muted color palette ensures the focus is all on the brew. Guests enter the space through wide-open metal garage doors that create a sense of openness, adding to the casual warehouse feel. The ceiling is high with exposed wood beams above the simple concrete floor.

Within the 60-seat space, beer-goers can drink and mingle at picnic tables in the main area and high-top square tables in the tasting room, which can be booked for private events. Barrels line the walls of the bar area, serving as additional spots for guests to congregate and rest their beers. Brewery tours are available for burgeoning beer experts, and a food truck will be regularly parked outside, serving bites to complement the brew.

Throughout the space, graphics are painted directly on the wall in 3 Stars branded colors of red and black. The star motif makes an appearance throughout, exuding an almost Western feel. The simplicity and strong structural design of the concept perfectly reflects the brew: this is no baroque wine bar or dimly lit cocktail lounge, but a comfortable, casual place to share a growler with good friends.

The partnership between 3 Stars and //3877 was as easy and uncomplicated as the brewery concept they brought to life. Both D.C.-based teams understand the value of small business and of beer. 3 Stars Brewery soon won’t be the only spot in D.C. where the local beer is on tap; a keg will soon be on draft in the //3877 office.
