Project Description:
Renowned as one of the original settlements in Alexandra, Virginia, modern-day Old Town Alexandria is a beloved downtown and nationally designated historic district situated on the picturesque Potomac River waterfront. The charming town’s brick-lined sidewalks are studded with centuries-old architecture and independent businesses, attracting locals and visitors alike. Established local restaurateur Noe Landini sought to create a modern yet contextual bar and lounge space in the area, bringing a new offering for dining and events to the local scene. In tackling the conversion of the first-floor of a 1790’s era warehouse to bring this dream to life, Noe tapped longtime collaborator //3877 as architect of record and interior designer for the project. The resulting space, named Privatus, is a destination for celebratory gatherings large and small, creating a sense of mystery and intrigue that keeps guests fully immersed through the clever use of materiality and lighting.

Directly connected to Noe’s existing F&B concepts Landini Brothers, a restaurant, and CXIIIREX, a members only club, Privatus creates a rentable event space that can be utilized by both venues. Privatus can also operate as an independent bar and lounge. Flexible lighting featured throughout allows the space to seamlessly transition from day to night, while flexible seating further emphasizes its multipurpose functionality. The renovation incorporates a bar, restrooms, small finishing kitchen, adaptable dining space, comfortable booths, and museum quality art displays, establishing a dynamic yet familiar environment.

The exterior of the building is consistent with 18th century federal warehouse architecture, adding a sense of charm to the experience. The //3877 team worked in tandem with the Board of Architectural Review and the City of Alexandria Historic Preservation to maintain the integrity of the interior and exterior while modernizing the space for necessary cooling and heating additions.

The atmosphere of Privatus is exclusive and refined, invoked through //3877’s use of rich tones and natural metals that complement the existing historic shell. The design team purposefully selected era-appropriate finishes, including marble, leather, and solid wood, to maintain the character of the existing building and its place in the community. The immersive materiality of hand hewn wood joists and beams, brick flooring, brick and stone walls accent dark stained white oak millwork and warm caramel tones of the original wood. Black and green tiles create a contrasting glimmer without distraction while a dark paint color palette sets the stage for the dramatic jewel box lighting at the bar.

The interior is luxurious yet inviting, setting the tone through warm dim lighting and custom red leather, Sinatra-style booths that accompany the showpiece bar. //3877’s approach was not without playfulness, incorporating attention-catching elements that create whimsy and mystery. Whether it be a secret picture frame-style door connecting to Landini Brothers or a custom mannequin outfitted in full matador garb housed in a custom museum display case, the design is sure to spark ongoing conversation among guests.
